While Warning About Fat, U.S. Pushes Sales of Cheese
Leaving the merits of low fat diets to a future blog, I wanted to comment on this New YorK times article. this article reminded me of a book I read several years ago called the china study. This is a book written by an american public health professional whose job for uncle sam for 40 years was to compare life style and nutritional habits between the US and china. His career took him to remote villages in china where people led mostly vegetarian lives, devoid of red meat and dairy. His findings consistently showed the detrimental effects of red meat and animal byproducts on health. To his astonishment, remote village dwellers in china had no notion of cancer at age 60 or heart attacks and strokes at age 50 and so on. in short they had almost zero incidence of the diseases that we suffer the most from here in the west.
Needless to say he went on to discover the origins of this fascination we have with eating eggs, milk and bacon for breakfast and then beef, lamb and pork for the rest of the day. He found out that historically, this was never the case. The dietary main stay was mostly vegetarian (grain and vegetable based) with the occasional hunted animal. This has been true for at least 12,000 years i.e. since the last ice age receded. So why are we emphasizing all sorts of animal products in our diet? well for purely economic reasons. the beef and pork industries have a tight grip on the department of agriculture and goverment policy. They are so powerful they have convinced congress to enact laws that prohibit anyone for disparaging red meat and dairy under the threat of jail and hefty fines. On a personal note, I used to be heavy meat an dairy eater until about 3 years ago when for a multitude of reasons decided to become vegetarian. I have to say that except for feeling occasionally hungry everything about the shift has been rewarding. My energy in improved, my focus and concentration too. my skin feels lively and on and on. here is a link to the book mentioned above. I am not affiliated with the author or publisher but I feel like this book could potentially save lives and help lots of people. http://www.amazon.com/China-Study-Comprehensive-Nutrition-Implications/dp/1932100660/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1289088575&sr=1-1 Rami Serhan, MD
