How autism leads to genius: a tale of acceptance with unimaginable results

I can't emphasize enough that autistics have it bad enough in society without the expectation that each and everyone of them is a genius. Truth is this is an unrealistic expectation and an unwelcome one.

However, this does not lessen the intrinsic value of any autistic individual. The story I am referencing is not proof of an across the board genius quality that comes with autism. Far from it in fact. This story is a tale of acceptance that bares fruit in ways no one could imagine.

For everyone out there who wants their kids to be like them in every way, even at the expense of the child's natural tendencies, this story is for you. Like I always tell my clients, if your child does not meet your expectations, try meeting hers.

I am faced daily with pseudo-scientists, mis-guided healthcare providers and ignorant parents who watch an autistic child being who she is and conclude that they ought to make the child act and behave in their own image and according to their own conditioning and perception of right and wrong.

The distress their efforts lead to far outweigh any benefit they seek, no matter how well meaning their efforts are. Unfortunately the autistic child bares the brunt of that distress. This is because if there is one defining quality in autism it is that these individuals have to adhere to their natural tendencies because they can not help themselves. They are who they are and they can not change who they to please anyone.

I am sure a lot of people will disagree with me. After all subduing nature is common practice in society today. not that i favor this course, but that i am highlighting it as the wrong way to steer civilization. Observing natural laws is the only logical way to go. Refusing to heed natural laws is only done when when terrible consequences are to be expected. Look at the manipulation of the food industry with unsanctioned chemicals that are making people massively sick and overweight... Look at the pharmaceutical industry and it's approach that completely ignores nature and where it has led us.

In the case of autism heeding natural laws and allowing children to follow their own inclinations is the only way to usher these kids to this world and break their isolation. While they may comply under duress with the well meaning yet misguided applied behavioral therapy, the long term consequences are not favorable. When the mind is asked to veer toward learning canned behaviors, this takes away from creativity and learning in other aspects of one's life. We cannot occupy our kids with learning behaviors that are only rewarding to us adults. Doing so will make education in it's objective form that much harder for these kids and many times impossible. This is because they are spending the majority of their mental capacity trying to please us by acting in ways recognizable to us.

What a shame and an over-indulgence by adults that needs to stop and stop stop yesterday.

What if your child does not act they you want her to. This does not make her wrong. This only means there are various forms of normal and that you the parent is getting an education in types of normal you are not accustomed to. DO YOU WANT YOUR KID TO HAVE A SHOT AT GENIUS, THEN LET THEM BE.
