Thu, 18 Nov 2010 10:40:33 -0800 IQ scores can`t predict academic performances of autistic kids http://psychesmartautismtm.posterous.com/iq-scores-cant-predict-academic-performances http://psychesmartautismtm.posterous.com/iq-scores-cant-predict-academic-performances

I just finished blogging on another subject that is near and dear to my heart. However this article about autism and IQ scores compelled me. The study done by the university of Washington researchers found that in 90 percent of cases the IQ score did not predict an autistic child's academic achievement and learning potential. In fact IQ scores are designed for non-autistic children and are completely irrelevant to autistic and asperger's kids.

Here is how it works, most neurotypical children develop abstract and three dimensional thinking early on, while lag behind profoundly on logical thinking. Society being what it is, IQ tests fit this reality. That is IQ tests examine abstract thinking, three dimensional object manipulation and do not dwell into logical and concrete thinking as much.

Autistic kids develop logical and concrete thinking early on and lag behind on three dimensional and abstract thinking. However, there is no IQ test that examines their abilities. They are subjected to a test that is irrelevant to them and unfortunately in many cases judged by it.

This has got to change. You can test someone only after you develop a test that fits their natural abilities not some alien test that is called intelligence quotient. The naming here is nothing but an oxymoron.

The more I dwell into autism, and I have been doing it full-time since 1993; the more I am convinced that we are witnessing a historic divergence of the human species. This species once thought to be a single entity is currently being split into two sub-species, a majority insensitive, ruthless, violent, abstract thinking group called neurotypicals and a minority gentle, just, sensitive, peaceful, concrete ad logical thinking minority called autistic or highly sensitive.

Again, lone voice in the prairie, I think not.
